Leh, April 27: Former Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor of BJP-led LAHDC Leh, Adv. Tashi Gyalson, on Monday said that the formal notification for the newly announced districts of Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra and Changthang is likely to be issued soon following his meeting with Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Vinai Kumar Saxena.
Gyalson called on the Lieutenant Governor at Lok Niwas and held a detailed discussion regarding the immediate notification and operationalisation of the five new districts, which were announced in 2024 to strengthen governance and improve service delivery in Ladakh’s remote and far-flung areas.
He said the creation of these districts was aimed at bringing governance and development closer to the people, especially in border and underserved regions.
He added that the people of Ladakh remain grateful to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for taking this historic decision.
However, Gyalson expressed concern that despite the announcement, no formal notification had been issued so far, delaying the functioning of the new districts.
He urged that the districts be made functional immediately, even with the existing manpower of the Union Territory Administration, until additional posts are created.
He also suggested that each district should initially be headed by a Deputy Commissioner and a Superintendent of Police to ensure effective administration.
According to Gyalson, the Lieutenant Governor assured him that immediate steps would be taken and the formal notification for the new districts would be issued soon.
