Leh: Renowned preserver and promoter of Ladakh’s heritage and culture, Nathaniel Batapa passed away on Friday. He was the pioneering founder of the Moravian Mission School in Leh.

On behalf of LAHDC Leh, the Chairman/CEC, Tashi Gyalson offered his deepest condolences on the passing of Nathaniel Batapa.

“My heartfelt condolences to the family members of the late Shri. Nathaniel Batapa on this moment of utmost grief. It is a great loss to the entire Ladakh as Shri. Nathaniel leaves behind a legacy of unparalleled contributions to Ladakh’s cultural, educational, and artistic landscape. My prayers for the noble soul to rest in eternal peace,” stated CEC Tashi Gyalson.

Born in Chushot, Leh Ladakh, Nathaniel Batapa’s dedication to preserving and promoting Ladakhi heritage was exemplary.

As the First Assistant Director and Founder of the Jammu and Kashmir Government Department of Handicrafts in Ladakh, he was pivotal in nurturing local talent and showcasing Ladakhi craftsmanship on a wider platform.

He was also a pioneering founder of the Moravian Mission School in Leh. Nathaniel was not only an accomplished artist but also a linguist, demonstrating proficiency in the Bhoti language.

His expertise in reading and writing Bhoti was unparalleled and served as a bridge between generations, preserving our rich linguistic heritage. Nathaniel’s contributions will be remembered with gratitude by the future generations of Ladakh.
