Leh: Senior IPS officer Mukesh Singh (IPS: 1996, AGMUT cadre) has been appointed as the Director General of Police (DGP), Ladakh with immediate effect, according to the latest official order.
The appointment marks a significant leadership transition for the Union Territory at a time when security management and border coordination remain critical.
Singh’s elevation comes close on the heels of his appointment by the Ministry of Home Affairs as Additional Director General (ADG) in the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP).
However, with his appointment as DGP, Ladakh, Singh is set to take charge of the UT’s top police post with immediate responsibility for law and order, internal security, and coordination with central armed police forces.
Prior to this, Mukesh Singh was serving as Inspector General (IG) of ITBP since October 17, 2023, following his deputation in September that year.
His promotion from IG to ADG was widely seen as a recognition of his operational experience and strategic leadership within India’s security apparatus.
A 1996-batch IPS officer, Singh is regarded as a seasoned counter-terrorism specialist with extensive field experience in Jammu and Kashmir.
During some of the most challenging phases of militancy, he served as Superintendent of Police in volatile districts including Reasi, Pulwama, Poonch, and Jammu.
Known for leading from the front, Singh played a key role in several major anti-terror operations and has received multiple gallantry awards for his courage and operational excellence.
He is also a founding member of the National Investigation Agency (NIA), India’s premier counter-terror investigation body.
At the NIA, Singh held crucial positions as SP, DIG, and IG, and was involved in probing several high-profile terror cases, further strengthening his reputation as a sharp investigator and strategic thinker.
An alumnus of IIT Delhi with a degree in civil engineering, Singh joined the Indian Police Service after clearing the UPSC Civil Services Examination and completed his training at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy in September 1996.
Beyond active policing, he has contributed significantly to academic and professional discourse in law enforcement. He has co-authored the book Police Operations and published multiple research papers on encounter investigations and counter-terror operations, which are widely referenced in police training and policy circles.
Before his latest appointment, Singh was serving as Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Jammu Province, where he continued to oversee critical law-and-order and counter-terror initiatives.
With his appointment as DGP, Ladakh, the UT is expected to benefit from Singh’s deep operational experience, institutional knowledge, and strategic approach to policing, particularly in the context of border security, counter-insurgency, and coordination with central forces operating in the region.
