Leh 05: In a powerful tribute to the legacy of Kushok Bakula Rinpoche, the first-ever memorial lecture was held at Central Institute of Buddhist Studies (CIBS), marking a key highlight of the 2569th Vesak Buddha Purnima Week celebrations in Leh.
Held at Nagarjuna Hall under the theme “Peace Beyond Borders,” the event reflected Ladakh’s deep-rooted spiritual ethos and its global message of harmony and compassion.
The समारोह began with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp and offering of khatag to Gautama Buddha and Kushok Bakula Rinpoche, setting a solemn tone.
Delivering the keynote address, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju подчеркed India’s identity as the land of Lord Buddha and its enduring message of peace. He described Rinpoche as a visionary leader with global influence, highlighting his diplomatic role in strengthening cultural ties with countries like Mongolia and his contributions to modern education and Buddhist preservation in Ladakh.
Rijiju also urged the youth to draw inspiration from Rinpoche’s life, assuring continued support from the Government of India for the region’s development and cultural heritage.
Abhijit Halder, Director General of the International Buddhist Confederation, in his introductory remarks, emphasized the relevance of Buddhist values in today’s world. He lauded Rinpoche as a symbol of faith blended with public service, and highlighted his contributions as India’s Ambassador to Mongolia and Russia. He also announced an upcoming documentary on Rinpoche’s life.
Concluding remarks were delivered by Sonam Wangchuk Shakspo, who reflected on his personal association with Rinpoche and underscored his role in establishing institutions like CIBS and reaching remote parts of Ladakh despite challenges.
Earlier, Vice Chancellor Rajesh Ranjan appreciated the UT Administration’s support and shared insights into the teachings of the Buddha.
The event, organized in collaboration with CIBS, Flowering Dharma Ladakh, and the Asian Buddhists Conference for Peace, witnessed participation from top dignitaries including Chief Secretary UT Ladakh Ashish Kundra, senior officials, members of the Ladakh Buddhist Association, and representatives from religious and civil society groups.
The memorial lecture marks a significant step in institutionalizing the legacy of Kushok Bakula Rinpoche, ensuring that his message of peace continues to inspire generations.
