Leh: A delegation comprising members of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Delhi and entrepreneurs from Ladakh led by Chief Scientist, Dr Mahendra Darokar, called on the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Brigadier (Dr) BD Mishra (Retd), at Raj Niwas Thursday.

Dr Darokar informed about the CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology (IHBT) at Palampur where research around Himalayan plants, including plants of industrial and commercial importance for developing diversified technologies through multifaceted state-of-the-art facilities are carried out.

He informed about CSIR Floriculture Mission- an initiative taken to create opportunities for entrepreneurship development in floriculture. He informed about the potential of Lilium, tulip and gladiolus flowers in Ladakh.

Local entrepreneurs from Ladakh informed HLG about the potential of these flowers and the logistics issues faced by them.

The LG inquired about the possible interventions by CSIR to develop the fauna in Ladakh. He directed that the case be examined and feasibility be explored about the plan to plant tulip flowers on a pilot basis in different locations of Ladakh, especially at the sub-division headquarters, to provide exposure to the local entrepreneurs and farmers so that they can plant tulip and other flowers and sell it commercially to enable them to earn their living.
