Leh, May 16: A mega cleanliness drive was carried out across Sub-Division Kharu in Leh district on Friday under the directions of Deputy Commissioner Leh Romil Singh Donk, with officials, security forces, organisations and local volunteers joining hands to promote cleanliness and environmental awareness.
The drive, led by Mohd Shabbir, covered areas from Shende Morh near Stakna up to Upshi, including market areas and public spaces.
Officials said the initiative was aimed at strengthening public awareness regarding sanitation, encouraging community participation and maintaining a clean and healthy environment in the region.
The campaign witnessed participation from officials of various departments under Sub-Division Kharu, Ladakh Police, the Army, 11 RCC BRO, Department of Rural Development Leh, merchant associations, volunteers and representatives of the Confederation of Indian Industry Foundation supported by HDFC Bank Parivartan.
During the drive, participants cleaned roadsides, market areas and public spaces by removing plastic waste, garbage and litter. Authorities said the collected waste was scientifically gathered and disposed of to improve sanitation and cleanliness across the area.
The campaign also focused on spreading awareness among shopkeepers, commuters and local residents about maintaining hygiene and avoiding littering in public places.
Addressing participants, SDM Kharu Mohd Shabbir stressed the need for regular cleanliness drives, stating that such campaigns play a vital role in promoting hygiene, public health and environmental responsibility.
He appreciated the coordinated efforts of departments, security agencies, organisations and volunteers in making the initiative successful and called upon citizens to actively contribute towards preserving Ladakh’s natural beauty.
The SDM also appealed to residents to avoid dumping garbage along roadsides, markets and open spaces, adding that consistent public participation can help Ladakh emerge as a model region for environmental conservation and cleanliness.
Officials described the drive as an important step towards building a cleaner Ladakh and encouraging similar initiatives across other villages and subdivisions in the Union Territory.
