Kargil: In observance of World No Tobacco Day 2025, the District Tobacco Control Cell, Kargil, in collaboration with Team Stringmo, a dynamic group of young girls, organized a vibrant and impactful 5KM Marathon on Saturday aimed at raising awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco and promoting a healthy, tobacco-free lifestyle in the district.
The event was organised with the theme “Unmasking the Appeal: Exposing Industry Tactics on Tobacco and Nicotine Products’ by organizing a marathon for a tobacco-free future.”
The event kicked off early in the morning with over 50 enthusiastic students, both male and female, from various higher secondary schools actively participating.
Carrying placards and chanting slogans against tobacco use, the marathon runners sent a powerful message of commitment to public health and well-being.
The Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kargil, Shrikant Balasahib Suse graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and flagged off the marathon to loud cheers and applause.
Speaking on the occasion, DC Shrikant Suse applauded the District Health Society for organizing the event and emphasized the importance of community engagement in tobacco control efforts.
He noted that the district administration has taken significant steps to curb tobacco use, including a ban on harmful products like Cool Lip.
The Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Kargil, Imteeaz Kacho, present as the Guest of Honour, applauded the efforts of the District Tobacco Control Cell and commended the active involvement of women-led initiatives like Team Stringmo, calling them a symbol of empowerment and leadership in health and social change.
Other dignitaries in attendance included Dr. Fatima Nissa (Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Kargil & Nodal Officer, NTCP), Dr. Jalil (BMO Kargil), and Masood Ahmad (District Consultant, NTCP), along with officials from the Health, Education, and Police Departments.
The marathon concluded with the distribution of certificates, mementos, and tokens of appreciation to the top performers.
Pamphlets and informational material were distributed among the public to reinforce the anti-tobacco message.
The District Tobacco Control Cell reaffirmed its commitment to a Tobacco-Free Kargil and urged citizens to join the movement for a healthier and addiction-free future for coming generations.
