Leh, Apr 8: In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the Union Territory Administration of Ladakh has introduced bamboo and a range of flowering trees—including Gulmohar, Jacaranda, Bougainvillea, and Amaltas—in Leh, aiming to enhance the region’s green landscape and ecological diversity.

Sharing the development, Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena said the plantation is being carried out on an experimental basis in and around Lok Niwas.
The saplings, sourced from Delhi, were initially kept under controlled conditions for around 10 days to help them acclimatise to Ladakh’s extreme climate before being planted.
Officials said a team of horticulture experts has been assigned to closely monitor the growth and adaptability of these plants in the high-altitude cold desert region.
The initiative is aimed at enriching Ladakh’s floral diversity, improving the aesthetic appeal of the area, and promoting environmental sustainability. If successful, it could open the door for similar plantation drives across the Union Territory.
