Leh, March 14: Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Vinai Kumar Saxena on Friday directed the preparation of a comprehensive plan to create at least 50 small water bodies across the Union Territory to address growing water scarcity and support agricultural activities.
During a meeting with Chief Secretary Ashish Kundra, the Lieutenant Governor asked officials to identify suitable locations and prepare a detailed action plan within 15 days.
The initiative aims to tackle water-related challenges faced by residents, particularly farmers who rely on limited water resources for irrigation in the cold desert region. The proposed water bodies will serve as reliable sources of water for agricultural fields and support upcoming roadside plantation drives planned in mission mode.
Officials said the water bodies will also help conserve rainwater and melting snow that otherwise goes to waste every year. During winter, when these water bodies freeze, they may also be utilised for winter sports activities.
To make the sites community-friendly, Saxena directed the administration to include recreational and public facilities such as parking areas and eateries around the water bodies.
Highlighting environmental concerns, the Lieutenant Governor noted that Ladakh is increasingly facing the adverse impacts of climate change, including declining snowfall, receding glaciers, rising temperatures and depletion of groundwater levels.
He stressed that sustainable water management is essential to ensure long-term water security in the region. The proposed water bodies, he said, will not only support irrigation but also strengthen local livelihoods and improve environmental sustainability.
Saxena further directed that the plan be scientifically designed, keeping in mind the unique geographical and climatic conditions of the high-altitude region.
Reiterating the administration’s commitment, the Lieutenant Governor said the UT government will continue to take proactive and sustainable measures to protect Ladakh’s fragile ecosystem while ensuring the welfare and livelihood security of its people.
