Leh: The Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Brigadier (Dr) BD Mishra (Retd), launched the official logo of “Mudu Unna (Soft Wool) Pashmina Ladakh” in New Delhi, marking a significant step towards empowering women’s Self-Help Groups (SHGs) across the Union Territory.
The First Lady, Neelam Mishra, was also present at the launch, having conceptualised the initiative herself. The logo was designed by Kaninika Mishra.
The term “Mudu Unna” has been derived from the Pali language, where “mudu” means soft and “unna” means wool. The initiative is part of the broader vision, “Pashmina: The Soft Gold of Ladakh,” aimed at promoting Ladakhi Pashmina as a high-value, authentic, and sustainable product.
Speaking at the event, LG Mishra underlined the UT Administration’s commitment to the pashmina sector, especially in the high-altitude Changthang region.
He highlighted the measures being taken to support pashmina herders, including the provision of kid pens to help reduce the mortality of newborn goats during harsh winters.
He expressed hope that the new branding effort will strengthen the livelihoods of women artisans and enhance the visibility of Ladakhi Pashmina on national and global platforms.
Deputy Resident Commissioner of Ladakh Bhawan, Delhi, Sonam Chhosdon, JKAS, also addressed the gathering. She stressed the need for a unified brand to represent the collective efforts of SHGs and cooperatives, ensuring fair wages, skills enhancement, and the preservation of Ladakh’s traditional techniques.
The initiative is expected to give women artisans better access to markets while safeguarding the cultural heritage associated with pashmina weaving.
The launch of the Mudu Unna logo marks a milestone in Ladakh’s journey towards inclusive economic development through the empowerment of women and the promotion of traditional crafts.
