Leh Sarpanch Coordination Committee calls on LG Mishra

Leh: A delegation comprising members of the District Sarpanch Coordination Committee Leh led by its President, Tsewang Norboo, called on the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Brigadier (Dr) BD Mishra (Retd), at Raj Niwas Thursday.

Norboo raised several issues related to the functioning of the Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) in Ladakh, viz. the need to strengthen the Panchayati Raj system as per the 73rd Constitutional Amendment Act by providing them with more resources, training and decision-making authority; provide support in the development of infrastructure such as road, water supply, electricity, schools and healthcare facilities, etc. in remote areas of Ladakh; promote employment and livelihood opportunities through skill development of entrepreneurs, etc; protect and conserve the fragile ecosystem of Ladakh through the promotion of sustainable practices; discuss strategies for the promotion of responsible tourism along with preservation of cultural heritage and ensuring equitable distribution of benefits among local communities of Ladakh, etc.

Norboo highlighted the need to check plans for developmental activities under the Special Development Package through Gram Panchayats and the revival of the Back to Village programme.

He emphasised the need for the attendance of members of allied departments during Gram Sabhas to prepare elaborate plans for development projects in different panchayats.

The LG asked the PRIs members to make development plans as per their requirements. He instructed Deputy Commissioner Leh and Director RDD to ensure that the representatives of allied departments attend the Gram Sabhas.

He also instructed DC Leh to look into the issues raised by the delegates and ensure all possible assistance in this regard.

Member of Parliament from Ladakh, Jamyang Tsering Namgyal; Deputy Commissioner, Leh, Shrikant Suse and Director, RDD, Shri Tahir Hussain, were present in the meeting.
