Leh, June 17: Reinforcing its commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable resource management, the Integrated Watershed Management Programme (IWMP), Leh, on Wednesday organized a series of activities across multiple watershed villages to mark the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought.
Under the leadership of the Project Officer, PMKSY-WDC 2.0, the programme witnessed the Bhumipujan (foundation laying) of newly sanctioned watershed development works, Lokarpan (inauguration) of completed assets, and large-scale plantation drives across various micro-watersheds in Leh district.
The events saw enthusiastic participation from Panchayati Raj Institution representatives, Watershed Committees, Self Help Groups, village volunteers, beneficiaries and local residents, reflecting strong community involvement in environmental protection initiatives.
Organized under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana – Watershed Development Component (PMKSY-WDC 2.0), the programme aimed to raise awareness about the growing threats of land degradation, desertification, drought and climate change, while promoting sustainable management of natural resources.
As part of the celebrations, plantation drives were carried out to enhance green cover, support ecological restoration and encourage greater community participation in conservation efforts.
During the events, officials highlighted the crucial role of integrated watershed development in improving water security, soil conservation, groundwater recharge, climate resilience and sustainable livelihoods, particularly in Ladakh’s ecologically fragile landscape.
The newly inaugurated watershed assets are expected to significantly strengthen natural resource productivity and contribute to the socio-economic development of local communities.
Project Officer, IWMP Leh, Mrs. Shenaz Tabassume, reiterated the department’s commitment to achieving the objectives of PMKSY-WDC 2.0 through participatory watershed management, conservation of land and water resources, and the promotion of sustainable development practices across the district.
The programme concluded with a collective pledge by participants to protect the environment, conserve water resources and actively contribute towards combating desertification and drought, paving the way for a greener and more sustainable future for Ladakh.
