Leh, November 14, 2025:
The District Social and Tribal Welfare Office, Leh, in collaboration with the Tribal Research Institute (TRI) of the University of Ladakh, commemorated the 150th birth anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda at the DC Conference Hall on Thursday.
District Social and Tribal Welfare Officer, Shri Mohd Safdar Bhat (JKAS), chaired the event and reflected on the extraordinary life of Birsa Munda—celebrated as one of India’s most revered tribal freedom fighters and social reformers. He highlighted Birsa Munda’s pivotal role in mobilising tribal communities against British rule and his enduring legacy of courage and social empowerment.
The programme featured a PowerPoint presentation by Stanzin Glake, tracing Birsa Munda’s journey from Ulihatu village to becoming a tribal icon. The session also spotlighted Munshi Abdul Sattar, a tribal freedom fighter from Ladakh, detailing his contributions to India’s struggle for independence.
A short documentary on Birsa Munda’s life was screened, followed by a live telecast of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address on Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas.
Around 40 students from Mahabodhi School and Jamyang School, along with staff from DSWO, ICDS, and DCPU Leh, attended the event.
The commemoration concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Tehsil Social Welfare Officer, Thinlas Dorjay.
