Leh, Feb 7:
A Multi-Stakeholder Convergence Conference aimed at strengthening women’s safety and empowerment was organised in Leh under the Mission Shakti initiative of the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India.
The conference was convened by the One Stop Centre (OSC), Leh, functioning under the Department of Social and Tribal Welfare, UT Ladakh, at the DC Conference Hall. The event witnessed participation from the Police Department, District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), District Hub for Empowerment of Women, women associations, religious bodies, Self Help Groups, frontline workers and members of community organisations.
Officials highlighted that the One Stop Centre Leh, established in 2018, provides integrated support services to women facing violence and distress. The centre offers legal aid, medical assistance, police facilitation, psychological counselling and temporary shelter.
During the programme, awareness sessions focused on emerging challenges such as financial exploitation, cyber bullying, domestic violence and abandonment. Women Police officials sensitised participants about reporting mechanisms and preventive strategies, while also stressing the need for community and institutional support in cases involving marital conflicts and abuse.
Representatives of women associations shared grassroots challenges and raised concerns over women’s land rights and limited participation in family and community decision-making processes.
Male participants from social organisations appreciated ongoing initiatives for women’s protection but also raised concerns over rising drug abuse cases involving young girls.
The District Legal Services Authority briefed attendees about legal safeguards under laws such as the POCSO Act, Prohibition of Child Marriage Act and Domestic Violence Act, emphasising timely reporting and public vigilance. The District Hub for Empowerment of Women highlighted the role of frontline workers in identifying vulnerable women and extending counselling and welfare support.
The conference concluded with a pledge against child marriage under the Bal Vivah Mukht Bharat Campaign, followed by interactive discussions on strengthening inter-departmental coordination.
Officials informed that women can access support services through the One Stop Centre in Leh or by contacting the Women Helpline at 181. Referrals can also be made through police, hospitals, courts, government departments, NGOs and community members.
