Leh: In a significant move highlighting Ladakh’s deep spiritual and cultural bond with His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, the Indian National Congress (INC) councillors in Leh today formally submitted a proposal to the Chairman of the LAHDC Leh, Adv. Tashi Gyalson, urging the Central Government to confer the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, upon the Tibetan spiritual leader.
Addressing the media, the official spokesperson of the Indian National Congress, Leh-Ladakh, who is also a councillor in LAHDC Leh, stated that the proposal was signed by all INC councillors and submitted during a meeting at the council headquarters.
The councillors emphasized that the current political atmosphere, with elections on the horizon, should not overshadow the spiritual significance of the Dalai Lama’s ongoing stay in Ladakh.
“This is a time of peace, compassion, and spiritual reflection as His Holiness resides in Ladakh. As a mark of our collective gratitude and deep respect, we have proposed that a resolution be passed in the council to recommend the Bharat Ratna for him,” said the spokesperson.
The INC leader recalled the Dalai Lama’s numerous contributions to promoting non-violence, compassion, wisdom, and ethical living, and noted that he has always referred to himself as the “Son of India” and the custodian of the Nalanda tradition of Indian Buddhism.
“For decades, His Holiness has lived in India, followed its customs, promoted its spiritual heritage, and served as a global symbol of peace. Honouring him with the Bharat Ratna will not only reflect India’s gratitude but also be a matter of immense pride for the entire nation,” he added.
Chairman Tashi Gyalson is said to have welcomed the proposal positively, appreciating the initiative and indicating a willingness to convene a special session of the LAHDC. The INC councillors also appealed to BJP councillors to join hands and support the resolution across party lines.
“We may be in the opposition, but we are committed to constructive politics. This initiative is about values and unity, not politics. We hope to present a joint appeal from Ladakh to the Centre,” the spokesperson concluded.
