LEH: International Women’s Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm with a mega event organised by the Department of Social & Tribal Welfare at the Main Market, Leh in collaboration with the women’s wing of the religious organisations of Leh.

The LG Ladakh, Brig. Dr. B.D. Mishra attended the event virtually. In Leh, the Chairman/CEC, LAHDC Leh, Tashi Gyalson attended the celebration and he was accompanied by ADGP Ladakh Police, Dr. S.D. Singh Jamwal; Commissioner/Secretary Social & Tribal Welfare Department, Padma Angmo; Commissioner/Secretary Tourism, Kacho Mehboob Ali Khan, and DC/CEO LAHDC Leh, Santosh Sukhadeve.

Other esteemed guests included Head of Women’s wing of socio-religious organisations, senior officers from Ladakh Police, and special women invitees from different walks of life.

CEC Gyalson congratulated everyone on the special occasion of International Women’s Day.

“As we celebrate this day with great enthusiasm, it is of equal importance that we should respect and treat each and every citizen equally at all stages of our lives. We have an excellent culture of respecting women and rarely see disparities in terms of opportunities being provided right from the birth of a girl child in Ladakh. From Education to Healthcare, Sports to Culture, our Ladakhi women have inspired us with their resilience and excellence, thus collectively contributing to the overall development of Ladakh,” stated CEC.

The CEC highlighted women’s role in the grassroots democratic set-ups with good representations in PRIs and Local Bodies in Ladakh.

He further added that the current government under the abled leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, the historic Women’s Reservation Bill was passed in the parliament exhibiting the Union Government’s commitment towards the social and economic empowerment of women.

The CEC further added that he would introduce a similar resolution on the reservation of seats for women in the upcoming General Council Meet of the LAHDC Leh emphasising the importance of having a good political space for women in the Hill Council.

LG Ladakh in the presence of all the dignitaries launched the ‘Ladakh Citizens Help Hub’, an online grievance portal for the people of Ladakh.

Different interactive sessions with the special invitees including a Special Podcast with the Chairman, and cultural programs were major attractions during the ceremony today.
