LEH: In a significant move aimed at bolstering the livelihoods of farmers and promoting sustainable agricultural practices, Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) Leh is offering subsidies to support farmers and promote sustainable practices in the agriculture sector.
The subsidy is part of various schemes aimed at improving the livelihoods of farmers in the region. These initiatives demonstrate LAHDC Leh’s commitment to fostering a thriving agricultural ecosystem.
“By providing financial support, the council aims to enhance crop yields, promote eco-friendly farming methods, and contribute to the region’s food security and underscore LAHDC Leh’s dedication to empowering farmers and promoting environmentally conscious agriculture in the region,” LAHDC spokesperson informed.
This initiative, part of a series of programs directed at enhancing agricultural productivity and ensuring food security in the region, reflects Hill Council’s unwavering commitment to fostering a robust agricultural ecosystem.
Amid small-scale farming and limited resources, and to adapt to changing environmental conditions, the LAHDC Leh has taken the proactive step of providing financial assistance to support farmers’ operational costs and encourage eco-friendly farming practices.
Going on the statistics provided by the Hill Council indicate Black Poly Sheet for Mulching 450 (2022-23), and 356 in the year 2023-24; Construction of Vegetable Cellars (size 10×12) 186 in 2022-23, and 76 in 2023-24 so far; Demonstration of Floriculture at rupees 5000 for procurement of seeds, bio-pesticides and mulching sheet, mentok thongskyet a total of 71 in 2022-23 and 138 in the year 2023-24 so far; and Revival of local traditional Rental (water mill) 72 so far in 2023-24.
The initiative is designed to cover a range of activities essential for modern farming. This includes financial support for purchasing high-quality seeds, organic fertilizers, and advanced irrigation systems.
It also aims to incentivize farmers to adopt sustainable agriculture methods, such as organic farming and integrated pest management, which not only yield better crops but also protect the fragile environment of the region.
