Leh, May 13: In a proud moment for Ladakh, Kulwinder Parhi, serving as Sub-Inspector and Auxiliary Nurse Midwife at Frontier Hospital Leh, has been conferred with the prestigious National Florence Nightingale Award 2026 by President Droupadi Murmu for her exceptional contribution to healthcare services in the region.
The award was presented during a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on International Nurses Day in the presence of Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda and Minister of State for Health Prataprao Jadhav.
Kulwinder Parhi was recognised for her nearly 28 years of dedicated service in some of the toughest hilly and tribal areas of Ladakh. She has played a crucial role in providing healthcare services to civilians as well as security personnel stationed in extreme high-altitude regions under severe weather conditions.
Her courage, prompt response during emergencies and relentless efforts in treating patients suffering from high-altitude illnesses in remote areas have reportedly saved numerous lives over the years. Her commitment and integrity have also earned her several commendation letters and appreciation from authorities.
The National Florence Nightingale Award, instituted by the Union Health Ministry, recognises outstanding nursing professionals across the country for their exceptional service, compassion and resilience. The award includes a Certificate of Merit, a medal and a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh.
Speaking on the occasion, President Murmu said nurses represent the highest standards of care and humanity and continue to play a vital role in strengthening healthcare delivery across the country, often under difficult and challenging circumstances.
This year, 15 nursing professionals from across India were honoured for their remarkable service in remote, tribal, island and high-altitude regions, including emergency healthcare and Covid-19 outreach operations.
Kulwinder Parhi’s recognition has brought pride to Ladakh and highlighted the invaluable contribution of frontline healthcare workers serving in the Union Territory’s challenging terrain.
