Leh: The Union Territory of Ladakh reported a total of 460 cases under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) during calendar year 2024, according to the latest ‘Crime in India 2024’ report released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).
With a mid-year projected population of 3 lakh, Ladakh’s crime rate stood at 152.3 per lakh population, while the charge‑sheeting rate for IPC/BNS cases was 75.5%.
Including offences under Special & Local Laws (SLL), the UT logged 498 cognisable crimes, resulting in an overall crime rate of 179.1 per lakh.
The total number of violent crimes – which include murder, attempt to murder, rape, kidnapping, rioting, robbery, dacoity, arson and grievous hurt – stood at 35 cases, giving a violent crime rate of 11.6 per lakh population.
A single case of murder was registered in Ladakh during the year, with one victim, and there were no cases of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
Four cases of attempt to commit murder were registered, with one victim. Ladakh recorded 34 cases of crime against women in 2024, at a crime rate of 25.6 per lakh women population and a charge‑sheeting rate of 78.1%.
Key offences against women included 9 cases of cruelty by husband or relatives (9 victims), 4 cases of assault on women with intent to outrage her modesty (4 victims), 3 cases of kidnapping and abduction of women (3 victims), and 4 cases of insult to modesty of women (4 victims).
No dowry death was reported, while one case of rape was registered with one victim.
A total of 17 crimes against children were registered in Ladakh in 2024, with a crime rate of 20.1 per lakh child population and a police charge‑sheeting rate of 75%.
The main offences against minors included 6 cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act (6 victims) and 3 cases of kidnapping and abduction of children (3 victims); no case of murder of a child was recorded.
Under property offences, Ladakh reported six cases of theft, two cases of robbery, and two cases of snatching.
The UT also recorded four cases of rioting and 17 cases of hurt or grievous hurt. In the category of Special & Local Laws (SLL), 38 cases were registered, yielding a crime rate of 26.8 per lakh and a high charge‑sheeting rate of 97.4%.
The NCRB report noted that, across all IPC/BNS cases in Ladakh, the charge‑sheeting rate was 75.5%, and the conviction rate for murder was 100% (one out of one case), while for rape it was 0% as no trial was completed.
