Leh, May 21: Chief Secretary Ashish Kundra on Thursday chaired a high-level review meeting to assess compliance with Supreme Court directions on implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026 across Ladakh, stressing strict monitoring and stronger waste management systems ahead of the peak tourist season.
During the meeting, officials informed that major waste dumping sites are currently operational in Leh and Kargil, while Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) and door-to-door waste collection systems are being strengthened in other districts.
Reviewing preparedness in environmentally sensitive and tourist-heavy areas, the Chief Secretary directed district administrations to ensure strict compliance by hotels, commercial establishments and tourism-related units, particularly near lakes, water bodies and tourist destinations. He emphasized the need for proper dustbins, waste segregation and efficient transportation systems to tackle growing waste disposal challenges in the Union Territory.
Ashish Kundra observed that awareness campaigns alone would not solve the issue unless backed by a robust waste management mechanism and instructed Deputy Commissioners to treat the matter seriously in view of Supreme Court directions and increasing tourist footfall in Ladakh.
Secretary, Housing & Urban Development Department Surbir Singh highlighted the need to strengthen solid waste systems, identify bulk waste generators and eliminate garbage-vulnerable points across the UT.
The meeting was attended by senior officers, Deputy Commissioners and officials from multiple departments, with district administrations directed to prepare comprehensive action plans for effective implementation and monitoring of waste management measures.
