Leh, Aug 7: In view of the recent spate of landslides and rockfalls that have caused widespread damage in villages and disrupted traffic on major roads, Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Brig. (Dr.) B.D. Mishra (Retd.) on Friday chaired a high-level review meeting with senior officials of the Army, Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and the Union Territory Administration to assess disaster preparedness and immediate preventive measures.

During the meeting, the Lieutenant Governor directed all concerned agencies to undertake immediate safety audits of identified high-risk stretches along the Leh–Kargil National Highway and the Khardung La axis. He stressed the need for adopting advanced engineering interventions, including rock bolting, flexible ring nets, soil nailing and smart detection systems, to reduce the risk of landslides and enhance road safety.

Reviewing the recent incidents, the LG emphasized that disaster management efforts must move beyond emergency response and focus on long-term prevention. He urged all agencies to shift from a “reactive response” to a “proactive safety and preventive measures” approach to minimize future risks.

The Lieutenant Governor appreciated the Army, BRO and other agencies for their swift rescue operations and road-clearance efforts following recent landslides, acknowledging their role in restoring connectivity and assisting affected residents.

He reiterated that the administration’s foremost priority is safeguarding human lives, protecting critical infrastructure and ensuring uninterrupted, safe connectivity for both residents and tourists across Ladakh.

The meeting reviewed the preparedness of various departments and discussed coordinated measures to strengthen disaster resilience in vulnerable areas across the Union Territory.
