Leh, April 21: Ladakh’s public transport system is set for a major upgrade with the sanctioning of 33 electric buses under the PM-eBus Sewa scheme by the Government of India, marking a significant push towards sustainable mobility in the Union Territory.
The fleet, comprising 7-metre electric buses tailored for Ladakh’s rugged terrain and high-altitude conditions, is expected to be delivered within a month. The initiative aims to modernise public transport by promoting clean energy, reducing pollution, and improving overall travel efficiency.
Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena termed the move a major step towards building an eco-friendly transport system in the region. He said the introduction of electric buses reflects the administration’s commitment to preserving Ladakh’s fragile ecosystem while enhancing connectivity and accessibility for residents.
Saxena noted that the new fleet will not only help cut carbon emissions but also offer an affordable and reliable mode of transport, especially benefiting people in remote and far-flung areas.
The initiative aligns with the broader vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to develop Ladakh as a carbon-neutral region through sustainable and environment-friendly measures.
Officials said the compact design of the buses will ensure smooth movement across Ladakh’s challenging roads, while significantly strengthening the region’s public transport network.
The UT Administration has been actively pushing green initiatives, including electric mobility and solar energy, to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and protect Ladakh’s pristine environment.
