Leh: Reinforcing the region’s centuries-old textile legacy, the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Vinai Kumar Saxena has underlined a renewed push to transform Ladakh into a global hub for premium Pashmina production after reviewing operations at the Pashmina Dehairing Plant in Leh.
During the inspection, the LG Vinai Kumar Saxena closely assessed multiple stages of raw Pashmina wool processing and directed officials to make optimal use of modern infrastructure, including the newly installed scouring machine, to enhance efficiency and ensure output meets global quality benchmarks.
Emphasising value addition at the grassroots level, the LG also called for expanding livelihood opportunities by promoting hand-spinning practices, strengthening skill development initiatives, and exploring commercial use of coarse wool for rugs and carpets, which continue to have strong market demand.
Reaffirming his commitment to the sector, he stated that Pashmina remains an ancient heritage of Ladakh and reiterated the vision of positioning the region as a global benchmark for the finest quality Pashmina through improved processing systems, higher quality standards, and stronger local value chains.
Officials have been asked to accelerate efforts to integrate traditional craftsmanship with modern technology, ensuring both preservation of heritage and sustainable economic growth for local communities dependent on the Pashmina ecosystem.
