Ladakh Congress pays tribute to Indira Gandhi on 106th Birth Anniversary

LEH: Ladakh Territorial Congress Committee paid rich tribute to former Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi on her 106th Birth Anniversary.

Indira Gandhi, popularly known as the Iron Lady led the country after the unfortunate demise of Lal Bhadur Shastri in 1966. At a time when women empowered wasn’t in vogue she emerged on the political landscape of the country as a towering leader.

She dismembered Pakistan by liberating Bangla Desh – cocking a snook at the US Seven Fleet stationed in Bay of Bengal to threaten India. She nationalized large of Banks and abolished the privy purse of the the princely states.

She strengthened public sectors units and continued with socialist , mixed economy with emphasis on large and heavy industries in the public sector and five year planning system.

For her extraordinary feat of liberating Bangla Desh one of the pre – eminent opposition leaders of the era and former Prime Minister, Atal Biharii Vajpayee described her as Durga.

Her operation Smiling Budhha laid the ground for India becoming a nuclear power state. It was during her time that Wing Commander, Rakesh Sharma was sent to space.
Born in 1917 in Nehru family she had nationalism and patriotism in her DNA. She had a special affinity with Ladakh and its rich culture.
