LEH: Ladakh Academy of Art, Culture and Languages, Leh and Ladakh Cultural Forum paid tribute to Dr. Jamyang Gyaltsen, highlighting his literary contributions in preserving Ladakh’s rich cultural heritage.
“It is with the deepest sadness that we receive the news of the passing of Prof. Dr. Jamyang Gyaltsen. In addition to his many wide-ranging and significant contributions in the field of language and literature, we are remembering Dr. Jamyang Gyaltsen’s contribution in Buddhist studies and cultural preservation. In Ladakh, we continue to be inspired and guided by his vision,” stated Dr. Sonam Wangchok, President of the Ladakh Cultural Forum.
In addition to the members of LAACL and the Ladakh Cultural Forum, the executive councillor for culture at LAHDC Leh, Stanzin Chosphel, also participated in the condolence meeting held at the LAACL conference hall in Leh.
Speaking at the occasion, Chosphel requested scholars to help put together Dr. Jamyang Gyaltsen’s biography, which LAHDC Leh will help to publish for the benefit of individuals, researchers, and students.
Additionally, he assured to hold a larger gathering at LAHDC, Leh, in the near future to remember Dr. Jamyang Gyaltsen and discuss publications in the spirit of his memory.
Advisor of the Ladakh Cultural Forum, Tsewang Dorjay Dongbos, highlighted the contribution of Dr. Jamyang Gyaltsen to Bhoti language and literature. He also shared his memories with Dr. Jamyang Gyaltsen. Ven. Tsering Chosphel mentioned Dr. Jamyang Gyaltsen’s published writings and his involvement contribution to the Ladakh Gonpa Association.
Ven. Lobzang Nyantak also spoke about the contributions of Dr. Jamyang Gyaltsen in promoting Bhoti language and literature.
He shared how he himself has been benefited by the books of Dr. Jamyang Gyaltsen in improving writing skill.
The gathering of scholars, artist and cultural activists pledged to uphold the legacy of Dr. Jamyang Gyaltsen and carry forward his vision and legacy from where he has left off. The gathering also extended heartfelt condolences to the Breviate family members and prayed for his swift rebirth.
Finally, Dr. Tsewang Gyaltsen, the secretary of the Ladakh Cultural Forum, expressed gratitude to the members of the Ladakh Cultural Forum and the staff of LAACL for making the time to honour the late Dr. Jamyang Gyaltsen.
Dr. Jamyang Gyaltson was honoured with the 1st State Award of UT Ladakh in Literature and the Ladakh Literature Award 2024 by the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Leh besides many other recognitions and awards.
He was a prominent writer who has authored numerous books and research papers. He was a retired professor of Bhoti Language and Literature at the Central Institute of Buddhist Studies (Deemed to be University), Choglamsar, Leh.
He also contributed to the translation of His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s teachings into Ladakhi. For many years to come, his contributions to Buddhist studies, literature, and the Bhoti language and literature will be cherished.
