Taisuru, Dec 5, 2025: In a significant push for sustainable agriculture, Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Kargil-II, Zanskar, organized a Mega Awareness Programme on Soil Health Management at Taisuru Block to commemorate World Soil Day 2025. The event drew enthusiastic participation from farmers, especially women, from Namsuru and surrounding villages, reflecting growing awareness of the importance of soil conservation in the region.
Councillor Parkachik, Syed Ain-ul-Huda, graced the occasion as Chief Guest, while officials from the Departments of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Rural Development, and Forest Department participated, adding to the significance of the programme.
In his address, the Chief Guest lauded KVK Kargil-II for organizing such a high-impact event under harsh winter conditions, where outdoor engagement is challenging. He emphasized the pivotal role of soil in agriculture, food security, rural livelihoods, and environmental sustainability, urging farmers to adopt sustainable soil conservation practices and stay connected with scientists and experts for guidance.
Dr. Mehdi, Chief Scientist and Head of KVK Kargil-II, highlighted the Kendra’s efforts in developing agro-climatic–specific technologies for Zanskar, including the introduction of high-yielding vegetable pea variety PB-89, promotion of Red Coral onions, high-density apple plantations in Barsoo Nallah, and adoption of low-cost protected cultivation technologies enabling the growth of warm-season vegetables and non-traditional crops even in extreme climates.
Dr. Mehdi also delivered an engaging lecture on soil health management, stressing the use of natural farming inputs like Jeevamrut, Ghanjeevamrut, and Agniastra, while cautioning against the excessive use of chemical fertilizers, which could threaten long-term soil health in Ladakh.
Mrs. Raziya Banoo, District Agriculture Officer, provided insights into departmental schemes aimed at promoting profitable agricultural practices and enhancing productivity, while representatives from the Forest, Animal Husbandry, and Rural Development Departments highlighted the critical role of soil conservation under the theme of National Soil Day.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks, recognizing the participation of farmers, officials, and stakeholders who contributed to the day’s success, making it a landmark event for soil awareness and sustainable agriculture in the Zanskar region.
