Khaltse: The Horticulture Department, Leh, organised the Kisan Mela-cum-Fruit Exhibition 2025 at the SDM Ground, Khaltse, on August 11, drawing farmers, officials, and experts from across Ladakh.
The event was inaugurated by Councillor Khaltse Lobzang Sherab, with SDM Khaltse Mohd Sharif as Guest of Honour and Director Horticulture UT Ladakh, Shri Tsewang Phuntsog, as Special Guest.
Stalls displayed a vibrant array of locally grown fruits, flowers, and horticulture equipment offered at subsidised rates. The mela also served as a knowledge-sharing platform, with experts from KVK Leh, CAZRI Leh, the Horticulture Department, and Himmotthan Society offering insights on organic farming, fruit diversification, modern cultivation techniques, and Ladakh’s unique potential for apricot production.
Councillor Sherab stressed the need for stronger coordination between farmers and government agencies, blending modern technology with traditional practices for sustainable horticulture. SDM Mohd Sharif encouraged farmers to adopt organic methods, while Director Phuntsog highlighted the region’s favourable microclimate for diverse crops.
The Chief Horticulture Officer, Leh, Kunzang Wangmo, outlined departmental schemes and launched a one-year Planning Book for farmers. Speakers including Tsering Tsomo of Women Alliance Sham region and community representatives also addressed the gathering.
The mela concluded with a prize distribution ceremony, recognising winners in various fruit categories and honouring other participants.
With enthusiastic participation from farmers across villages, the event celebrated Ladakh’s farming achievements and reinforced the importance of innovation and collaboration in boosting the region’s horticulture sector.
