Kargil, June 12: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Kargil, under the University of Ladakh, successfully completed the 12th consecutive day of its “Khat Bachao Abhiyan” on Friday, marking the end of the campaign’s second week since its launch on June 1.
The campaign aims to promote soil health management, balanced fertilizer use, natural farming and sustainable agricultural practices among farmers across Kargil district.
As part of the ongoing awareness drive, KVK scientists visited several villages, including Darchiks and Garkon in the Aryan Valley, interacting with hundreds of farmers and farm women in remote areas. The initiative forms part of a nationwide effort to conserve soil fertility and encourage eco-friendly farming methods.
During the programme, experts educated farmers about the importance of soil testing, Integrated Nutrient Management (INM), organic manures, bio-fertilizers and natural farming techniques. Demonstrations were also conducted on compost preparation, vermicomposting, Jeevamrit and efficient nutrient management practices aimed at improving soil health and crop productivity.
Scientists highlighted the harmful effects of excessive chemical fertilizer and pesticide use and encouraged farmers to adopt climate-resilient and environmentally sustainable farming methods. Special emphasis was laid on promoting low-cost agricultural technologies suitable for the unique conditions of the region.
Interactive sessions allowed farmers to discuss challenges related to soil fertility, pest infestations and crop production. KVK experts addressed their concerns and provided practical solutions to improve farm income while protecting natural resources.
The campaign witnessed enthusiastic participation from local farming communities and has played a significant role in spreading awareness about sustainable agriculture practices in remote villages.
Speaking on the occasion, Head of KVK Kargil, Dr. Nasreen Fatima Kacho, said, “Khat Bachao Abhiyan is about empowering farmers with knowledge and low-input solutions that reduce crop losses and improve livelihoods. Reaching remote areas is central to our mandate. Continuous field presence builds trust and ensures timely interventions where they matter most.”
KVK Kargil reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening sustainable agriculture and enhancing farmers’ awareness through continued extension activities under the ongoing campaign.
