Kargil: In a significant public outreach, the Cyber Police Unit Kargil on Thursday handed over 21 recovered mobile phones to their rightful owners after tracing and retrieving them over the past two months.
The distribution event was held in the presence of SSP Kargil Shri Ram (IPS), Additional SP Kargil Nitin Yadav (IPS), DSP Headquarters Inayat Ullah, DSP Mohammad Ali, and other police officials.
Speaking on the occasion, officials said that the initiative was launched on the directions of DIG Vikas Kumar, who had asked the district police to expedite recovery and return of lost or stolen phones.
Under the leadership of Additional SP Nitin Yadav, the Cyber Unit, led by Inspector Abdullah and Sub-Inspector Mohammad Ali, worked relentlessly to track the devices.
Using the National Cyber Reporting Portal, 1938 helpline, and IMEI tracking systems, the team successfully recovered around 25 phones in June and July, of which 21 were returned to their owners in Kargil during the event. Some of the devices were traced to Ramban, Poonch, Kangan, and Leh.
SSP Kargil praised the team’s dedication, saying mobile phones are not only costly but also carry valuable contacts, photos, and personal data, making their recovery critical.
“This effort shows that Kargil Police is always active and committed to serving the public,” he said.
Residents expressed gratitude to the Cyber Police Unit for reuniting them with their devices, while police officials highlighted that the drive would continue to ensure more people benefit from timely recoveries.
