Acting on directions of the District Administration, Kargil, a joint inspection squad on Monday conducted a market checking drive in the Kargil Main Market to ensure compliance with quality standards, fair pricing and hygiene norms.
The inspection covered vegetable vendors, retail outlets, restaurants and tea stalls, with officials verifying food quality, cleanliness and adherence to prescribed regulations.
The joint team comprised officials from the Food Safety Department, Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs (FCS&CA), Pollution Control Committee, Metrology Department and Municipal Committee, Kargil.
During the drive, officials closely examined the prices of vegetables and fruits to curb overpricing and warned vendors against selling stale, rotten or expired food items, stating that such practices pose serious risks to public health.
Vendors and shopkeepers were also sensitised about maintaining proper sanitation standards and complying with Schedule 4 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The inspection team further directed traders to avoid the use of plastic carry bags and instead promote eco-friendly alternatives.
The Food Safety Department reiterated its commitment to ensuring the availability of safe and quality food products for consumers and said that such inspection drives will continue regularly to safeguard public health and protect consumer interests.
