Leh, May 11: In a significant boost to India’s human spaceflight ambitions, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is set to help upgrade the ‘Hope Habitat’ in Ladakh to support future training missions for astronauts linked to the Gaganyaan programme, according to reports.
The high-altitude analogue habitat, located in Ladakh’s remote Tso Kar valley and developed by space research company Protoplanet, is being expanded to simulate the extreme conditions astronauts may face during long-duration space missions.
As per reports, the project is being carried out in collaboration with ISRO’s Human Space Flight Centre following the successful completion of the Hope analogue mission in 2025. The mission reportedly involved studies on physical endurance, isolation, behavioural response and team coordination under harsh environmental conditions similar to space missions.
Dr Siddharth Pandey, founder of Protoplanet, said the Ladakh terrain was selected due to its extreme isolation, low oxygen levels, freezing temperatures and low atmospheric pressure, conditions considered ideal for preparing astronauts for spaceflight challenges.
Reports said Protoplanet recently participated in a simulation mission involving all four designated Gaganyaan astronauts, providing researchers an opportunity to study real astronaut crews in analogue mission conditions.
The upgraded Hope Habitat will reportedly include advanced communication systems, improved power infrastructure and enhanced scientific monitoring facilities. Surveillance systems, wearable biometric devices and behavioural monitoring tools are also expected to be installed to study astronauts’ physiological and psychological responses during prolonged isolation.
Psychologists from the Institute of Aerospace Medicine, Bengaluru, are also likely to be stationed at the site during future missions to observe crew behaviour and mental resilience, reports said.
The company is planning a major expansion of the habitat over the next two years to accommodate more personnel and centralise scientific data collection. Some upgrades are expected to be completed during the ongoing summer season in Ladakh, while additional work will continue next year.
According to reports, discussions are underway between ISRO and Protoplanet to make analogue missions in Ladakh a regular component of astronaut training under India’s ambitious Gaganyaan human spaceflight programme.
