Jammu, July 25: Indus Dispatch contributor and Jammu-based author Bharat Nanda today marked an important milestone in his literary journey with the formal unveiling of his latest book, Beyond the Himalayas: Rediscovering India’s Forgotten Geography, by Shri Kavinder Gupta, Hon’ble Governor of Himachal Pradesh, at a function held in Jammu.
The book explores India’s forgotten civilisational geography beyond the Himalayan ranges, tracing the ancient networks of trade, pilgrimage, learning and cultural exchange that once connected the Indian subcontinent with Tibet, Xinjiang and Central Asia. Through historical maps, manuscripts, travel accounts and archaeological evidence, it revisits the region’s shared past and highlights the movement of ideas, Buddhism, Sanskrit learning and commerce across the trans-Himalayan world.
A regular contributor to Indus Dispatch, Bharat Nanda has written extensively on India’s civilisational history, historical geography and strategic affairs. His latest work reflects the same research-driven approach, presenting complex historical themes in a style accessible to general readers while encouraging renewed interest in India’s wider historical landscape.
The book examines the historical significance of places such as Khotan, Kucha, Agni-desa, Turpan, Aksu, Yarkand, Kashgar, Aksai Chin, Demchok and Taklakot, seeking to recover a neglected chapter of India’s historical engagement with Central Asia. It does not seek to reinterpret present-day political boundaries but instead focuses on understanding the cultural and intellectual connections that shaped the region over centuries.
The unveiling ceremony was attended by distinguished guests, scholars and well-wishers, marking the formal release of a work that contributes to the growing body of literature on India’s civilisational heritage.
