Leh: The Department of Tourism, Union Territory of Ladakh, has strongly condemned a recent incident of illegal off-roading inside the ecologically sensitive Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary, near Hanle (Kalak Tartar), terming it a serious violation of wildlife protection laws and responsible tourism norms.
According to official reports, a tourist SUV bearing Himachal Pradesh registration number was found engaging in reckless off-road driving and was also seen chasing a Tibetan Gazelle, a near-threatened species. The incident caused significant disturbance to wildlife and damage to the fragile cold desert ecosystem of the high-altitude region.
Acting swiftly on the information, the Department of Tourism coordinated with the District Administration and District Police in Changthang. The vehicle was intercepted at the Police Check Post in Loma and subsequently handed over to the Wildlife Department. Authorities confirmed that the SUV was formally seized by the Wildlife Division, Leh, on June 18, 2026, and legal proceedings have been initiated under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
The Department reiterated that off-roading in protected and ecologically sensitive zones is strictly prohibited and punishable under law. It stressed that violations will be dealt with firmly in accordance with legal provisions.
Administrative Secretary, Tourism, UT Ladakh Sanjit Rodrigues, strongly emphasised the need for responsible tourism, stating that Ladakh’s cold desert ecosystem is extremely fragile and must be protected through strict adherence to designated travel routes and sustainable practices.
He further urged tourists and stakeholders to remain mindful of the region’s unique biodiversity and cultural landscape, adding that any action harming wildlife or disturbing natural habitats is unacceptable.
The Tourism Department has also called upon local stakeholders to report such incidents promptly and intensify awareness among visitors regarding eco-sensitive behaviour in high-altitude protected areas.
Reaffirming its commitment, the Department said it will continue to promote sustainable tourism while ensuring strict protection of Ladakh’s wildlife and ecological integrity.
