Leh: In a candid message ahead of assuming office, Ladakh’s newly appointed Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta has assured the people that his tenure will be defined by accessibility, accountability, and action.
His appointment as LG comes at a crucial time when Ladakh is witnessing evolving political aspirations and governance challenges.
Addressing concerns over statehood and connectivity, Gupta acknowledged the sensitivities involved. “I am aware of the internal and external dimensions of Ladakh’s situation. There have been voices of discrimination in the past. As LG, my role is to listen, learn, and act in the best interests of all communities—be it Buddhist, Muslim, or others.”
Gupta emphasized that the development of Ladakh—especially its far-flung areas like Nubra, Zanskar, and Drass—would be a top priority.
He noted that the central government’s efforts post-2019 have laid a strong foundation, but much remains to be done. “Connectivity, communication, and public services need to improve drastically. The Zojila Tunnel project, whose foundation I had the privilege to witness with the Prime Minister in 2018, must be completed during my tenure.”
On the recent protest movements in Ladakh and demands for constitutional safeguards, Gupta maintained a balanced tone.
“I am not here as a political figure anymore. I’m here to serve as a bridge between the Union Government and the people of Ladakh. I will listen to all stakeholders—former MLAs, Council members, religious heads, civil society—and try to build consensus wherever possible.”
He also highlighted the importance of decentralization and local governance. “Just as we implemented Panchayati Raj and empowered DDCs in J&K, I believe similar efforts in Ladakh can bring governance closer to the people.”
When asked about Ladakh’s fragile internet infrastructure and limited educational and healthcare facilities, Gupta said that bridging these gaps will be central to his mission. “No one should have to leave their home region for basic services. We will take that burden off our youth and families.”
Concluding with a direct message to the people of Ladakh, Gupta said: “I’m coming to Ladakh to work with you, not above you. I will be available, I will be accessible, and I will listen. Together, we will write the next chapter of Ladakh’s future.”
His official swearing-in as LG is expected in the coming days.
