Kargil: The Horticulture Department Kargil Monday issued recommendations for farmers regarding aphid infestation in apricot orchards.

As reported by the field staff of the Horticulture Department Kargil the apricot fruit trees are observed with aphid infestations with symptoms of curled leaves.

The life cycle of aphid is very short and it is not a life-threatening insect/pest for fruit trees. To control the aphid group which is sucking type insect/pest needs systemic insecticide for its control.

In case of Ladakh, people are adopt the organic practices, hence recommended the cultural and mechanical operation for effective control of aphid.

At this stage, the damage has already being done and now controlling of aphid infestation organically will not have significant result.

However, the following recommendations have been suggested to check the further infestation of aphid.
It said highly pressured fresh water spray in the morning/ evening can reduce the population.

Sticky yellow traps will attract winged population so that insect load will be reduced. Neem-based oil @ 3ml/ltr can be sprayed and repeat application after 15 days.

The farmers/orchardist are advised to fallow the recommendations to check the infestation are under control. For any technical guidance, people can contact Chief Horticulture Officer Kargil and respective field functionaries.
