Leh, December 18:
In a major push towards clean energy and sustainable healthcare, the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Shri Kavinder Gupta, on Wednesday inaugurated a 60 kW geothermal-based space heating system at the Primary Health Centre (PHC) Thiksay.
Developed as a pilot project at a cost of ₹80 lakh by Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), the eco-friendly system provides efficient heating without causing environmental pollution, making it ideally suited for Ladakh’s harsh winter conditions.
Addressing the gathering, the Lt Governor said the initiative would help make Ladakh a model Union Territory in clean energy adoption. He noted that the project demonstrates how modern, sustainable technologies can be successfully implemented even in remote, high-altitude regions.
The geothermal heating project was conceptualised following a visit by the Swiss Ambassador to Ladakh, who proposed introducing such green solutions on a pilot basis. The system is designed to maintain indoor temperatures between 20–25 degrees Celsius, significantly improving comfort for patients and medical staff during winter months.
Highlighting the administration’s focus on healthcare, Shri Kavinder Gupta said Ladakh continues to strengthen its medical infrastructure while aligning with the Prime Minister’s vision of a Green and Sustainable India. He also lauded the dedication of doctors, nurses and healthcare workers serving in challenging conditions.
Principal Secretary Dr Pawan Kotwal said enhanced funding post-UT status has enabled innovative projects like geothermal heating, which will support Ladakh’s goal of becoming a carbon-neutral region.
Director Health Services Dr Tashi Thinles noted that the system will reduce dependence on conventional power sources and improve operational efficiency in health facilities.
The event was attended by CMO Leh Dr Dolma Chuskit, BMO Leh Dr Nuboo Angchuk, EESL officials, local representatives and villagers of Thiksay.
