Leh: Department of Botany, Government Degree College, Nobra organised a one-day field trip to Diskit village on July 2. The aim of the trip was to identify, collect and know about the floral diversity of Diskit, Nubra.
It was informed that this is the perfect time to organise a botany field trip as most of the herbaceous species are at the blooming stage which is helpful for plant identification. BSc 3rd semester students were part of this tour under the guidance of Dr.Tsetan Dolker, Assistant Professor in Botany.
During the tour, more than 50 herbaceous species were identified along with some most dominant shrubs like Hippophaerhamnoids (Seabuckthorn), Myricaria sp. and Tamarixramosissima. Some algae, Bryophytes (Riccia asp, Funaria sp.), pteridophytes (Equisetum sp.), and Fungi (Bovista sp.) have been identified, collected and few of them were preserved in the college’s laboratory for further studies.
Further, the students get to know the habitats of different plants like marshy, aquatic and xerophyte as well as the importance of various plants. The important crops like barley (Hordeumvulgare), wheat (Triticumaestivum), pea (Pisumsativum) and potato (Solanumtuberosum) were growing in the fields of the village.
The students get practical knowledge about different species of plants like herbs, shrubs, climbers and trees.
