Kargil, October 27: Government Degree College (GDC) Kargil inaugurated a five-day Health and Wellness Workshop on Menstrual Hygiene under the Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyaan (PM-USHA). The event, held in the college seminar hall, saw participation from 139 girl students along with faculty members.
Principal GDC Kargil, Disket Angmo, in her welcome address, emphasized the importance of breaking the silence around menstruation, describing it as a natural rhythm symbolizing strength and vitality. She called the workshop a clarion call to end stigma and myths, highlighting its focus on empowerment, education, and equity rather than just hygiene practices.
Principal Degree College Drass and District Nodal Officer PM-USHA, Mr. Nasir Ul Mehdi Shabani, graced the occasion as chief guest. Commending GDC Kargil’s initiative, he said that menstrual hygiene remains a neglected area despite societal awareness and urged greater community focus for a healthier society.
Mr. Shabani informed that funds under the Gender Equity theme of PM-USHA have been allocated for colleges in Kargil district, enabling programs promoting inclusivity and confidence among students. He encouraged colleges to organize performing arts and leadership activities and announced that tour opportunities worth ₹20 lakh each would be available to colleges for active student participants through NSS, NCC, and cultural committees.
The inaugural day also featured a student group performance depicting the challenges faced by women in a patriarchal society. A baseline survey on menstrual awareness was conducted among participants, and Dr. Kunzes Dolma (AP Biotechnology) outlined the five-day program, which includes interactive sessions and expert-led discussions.
A question-answer session allowed students to engage directly with Mr. Shabani regarding PM-USHA initiatives. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Ms. Spalzes Angmo (AP Sociology) and coordination by Ms. Saba Shaheen (AP Political Science).
