Kargil: Unseasonal weather changes have triggered flash floods in several remote villages of the Shakar Chiktan region in Kargil district, causing extensive damage to public infrastructure and private property.
Following a cloudburst in recent days, floodwaters swept through villages, damaging government buildings, farmlands, and residential areas.
Among the worst-hit structures are a government hospital, Panchayat Ghar, and the Government Middle School in Kukarchey Chiktan. Vast stretches of agricultural land and irrigation canals have also been severely affected.
Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor (CEC) of the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) Kargil, Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, visited the affected areas along with Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Kumar and officials from various concerned departments. During the inspection, the CEC assured local residents that immediate steps will be taken to restore essential services and mitigate losses.
At the site, Dr. Akhoon issued on-the-spot instructions to officials from departments including PWD, Irrigation, Flood Control, and Public Health Engineering (PHE).
He directed the BDO and SDM Chiktan to immediately restore small irrigation canals and ensure drinking water supply is reinstated at the earliest.
He also instructed the officer in charge of Project Vijayak (81 RCC, GREF) to prioritize road clearance and restoration. Acknowledging the swift response by BRO machinery operators and laborers, the CEC appreciated their efforts in reopening key routes disrupted by the flood.
The Chief Agriculture Officer has been directed to assess crop losses in the region. Dr. Akhoon assured residents that the administration is committed to providing all necessary support and that restoration of essential services remains the top priority.
