Leh, March 3: In a landmark move for wildlife conservation, the Fire and Fury Corps of the Indian Army on Monday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Forest, Ecology & Environment Department, UT Ladakh, to safeguard the fragile high-altitude ecosystem of the region.
The MoU was formalised on World Wildlife Day in the presence of Lt Gen Hitesh Bhalla, UYSM, SC**, SM, VSM, General Officer Commanding, Fire & Fury Corps, and Chief Secretary UT Ladakh, Shri Ashish Kundra, IAS.
The agreement focuses on the conservation of iconic and endangered species such as the Snow Leopard, Himalayan Wolf, Bharal (blue sheep), Ibex, Marmot and the Black-necked Crane, along with protection of their natural habitats under the ambit of the Global Snow Leopard and Ecosystem Protection Program.
Officials said the initiative aims to promote sustainable development while strengthening environmental protection measures across Ladakh’s sensitive mountain terrain. As part of the pact, a Joint Snow Leopard Conservation Cell will be established to monitor and coordinate conservation efforts on the ground.
The Indian Army reiterated its long-standing commitment to balancing national security responsibilities with ecological preservation, especially in ecologically sensitive border areas. The partnership is expected to create a model framework for eco-friendly practices and collaborative wildlife management in high-altitude regions.
The initiative marks a significant step towards ensuring that Ladakh’s unique biodiversity and fragile ecosystem are preserved for future generations.
