Nubra, March 10: A one-day training-cum-demonstration programme on mushroom cultivation was organised for members of Ama Tsokspa at Diskit village to promote scientific farming practices and encourage an additional source of income for farmers, particularly women.
The programme was conducted by Agriculture Extension Officer Chimet Lhamo, along with Junior Agricultural Extension Officer Rigzin Dolma and Field Assistant Tsering Dorjay. During the session, participants were given detailed training on scientific mushroom cultivation and its benefits for income generation and nutritional security.
A practical demonstration covering the entire cultivation process was conducted, including preparation of substrate using wheat straw, sterilisation through boiling, drying and bag filling, and casing of mushroom seeds. Farmers actively participated in the hands-on demonstration to better understand the technique and its application at the household level.
Sub-Divisional Extension Officer Zahoor Hussain also addressed the gathering and informed participants about various government schemes and support programmes available for farmers, urging them to make use of these initiatives to enhance their agricultural activities.
Subject Matter Specialist Stanzin Gonbo delivered a session on soil health management and Integrated Pest Management (IPM), highlighting the importance of sustainable and eco-friendly agricultural practices.
The programme concluded with an interactive session where farmers raised queries related to mushroom cultivation and other farming practices. The training proved beneficial in enhancing farmers’ knowledge and encouraging them to adopt mushroom cultivation as a sustainable livelihood option in Diskit village.
