Leh: The Department of Sociology at Eliezer Joldan Memorial College organized an enriching research field trip to the Changthang region from August 16th to 18th, 2024.
The study tour included 60 enthusiastic students from the 3rd and 5th semesters, led by Dr. Tashi Lundup and Dr. Stanzin Namgail esteemed faculty members of the department.
The three-day trip kicked off with an introductory session on the agro-pastoral community of Gya valley. Karma Sonam, Field Coordinator with the Nature Conservation Foundation (NCF), guided the students through the efforts made by NGOs in the region to preserve natural and wildlife heritage.
This session was followed by a trek, where the students were introduced to the Sangdong to Stupa project, highlighting innovative approaches to mitigating human-wildlife conflict.
One of the key highlights of the trip was the interaction with the Samad-Rokchen pastoral community in Noray, their summer pastureland. This interaction allowed the students to immerse themselves in the nomadic lifestyle, gaining a deeper understanding of the cultural and social dynamics of the Changpa community.
On the second day, the group visited the Tsokar Ramsar Wetland, a site known for its rich biodiversity. The students observed a variety of bird species, including the endangered Black-necked Crane, and trekked through the surrounding hills.
The day also included a visit to the Nomadic Residential School in Puga, where the students engaged in interactive sessions and activities with the school children, concluding with a wildlife film screening in the evening.
The final day of the trip featured visits to the Puga Hot Spring and the geothermal site, followed by a stop at the Chumathang Hot Spring. The trip concluded with the students returning to Leh, having gained invaluable insights into the ecological and cultural landscape of Changthang.
This field trip was not only an academic exercise but also an opportunity for students to experience the unique challenges and opportunities faced by communities in Ladakh.
The students are set to share their learnings with their peers at Eliezer Joldan Memorial College in the coming weeks, contributing to the collective academic experience.
