KARGIL, June 4: In an effort to promote experiential learning and interdisciplinary education, Government Degree College (GDC) Kargil, Sankoo Campus, organized a three-day educational field trip to Zanskar for students from the Departments of Political Science, Economics, Sociology and History.
The tour, conducted from May 30 to June 2, involved 21 students and was organised under the guidance of Principal GDCK Disket Angmo and Nodal Officer Sankoo Campus Saleem Ahmed.
The field visit was supervised by a team of faculty members including Dr. Gulzar Hussain, Dr. Mohd Sharif, Dr. Stanzin Yangdol, Assistant Professor Tsering Angmo, Assistant Professor Zarina Banoo and Skill Instructor Shabir Ali.
Designed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world understanding, the tour provided students with valuable insights into the historical, socio-economic, political, cultural and environmental aspects of the Zanskar region.
During the visit, students explored several important sites including the Karsha Monastery, Bardan Monastery, Sani Monastery, the historic Sani Chorten, Sheela Waterfall, Padum Market and the majestic Drang Drung Glacier.
At Karsha Monastery, students interacted with monks and learned about the institution’s historical significance, administrative functioning and cultural heritage. They also engaged with members of the Women’s Alliance of Zanskar and gained firsthand knowledge of women’s participation in community development, social welfare initiatives and local governance.
Visits to Sheela Waterfall and Drang Drung Glacier provided practical exposure to issues related to environmental conservation, climate change and the ecological importance of fragile mountain ecosystems.
Faculty members said the tour helped students develop a deeper understanding of the region’s rich heritage, religious traditions, social institutions and environmental challenges while encouraging critical observation and field-based learning.
The educational excursion concluded successfully, with students describing the experience as academically enriching and personally rewarding. The organisers noted that such field visits play an important role in broadening students’ perspectives and enhancing their overall learning experience.
