KHALTSE, JUNE 16: A Special Drug Abuse Awareness Programme was organised at Gram Panchayat Saspol on Tuesday, bringing together government officials, healthcare experts, law enforcement personnel and community leaders to raise awareness about the dangers of substance abuse and promote a drug-free society.
The awareness programme witnessed active participation from local residents and key stakeholders, reflecting growing community concern over the issue of drug addiction and its impact on society.
Among those present were Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Liker, Shri Gurmeet Namgial; SHO Khaltse, Shri Tsewang Nurboo; Psychiatrist Dr. Padma; Inspector Skarma Angchuck; Panchayat Inspector Saspol; Numberdars of Saspol and Liker; officials from the District Social Welfare Department’s Drug De-addiction Awareness Team; and forensic expert Ms. Purnima.
The programme commenced with a welcome address by the Numberdar of Saspol. During the awareness session, Dr. Padma highlighted the harmful effects of drug abuse on individuals, families and communities, stressing the importance of early intervention and awareness.
Addressing the gathering, SHO Khaltse Shri Tsewang Nurboo spoke about the growing challenge of drug-related crimes and underscored the crucial role of community participation in curbing the menace. He urged citizens to remain vigilant and support law enforcement agencies in preventing the spread of narcotics.
Ms. Purnima from the Forensic Team educated participants about various narcotic substances and their long-term consequences, while officials from the District Drug De-addiction Awareness Team informed the gathering about counselling services, rehabilitation programmes and facilities available at de-addiction centres for affected individuals.
Speaking on the occasion, SDM Liker Shri Gurmeet Namgial called for collective responsibility in safeguarding youth from the dangers of drug addiction. He emphasised the need for sustained awareness campaigns and coordinated efforts by all stakeholders to create a healthy and drug-free environment across the region.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by the Numberdar of Saspol, who expressed gratitude to the dignitaries, resource persons and participants for contributing to the success of the awareness initiative.
