Leh, February 20: District Legal Services Authority Leh organised a Legal Awareness Programme at the DC Conference Hall, Leh, to commemorate the World Day of Social Justice, observed globally to promote equality, human rights, and equal opportunities for all, especially marginalized and vulnerable sections of society.
The programme was attended by Mr. Wangail Tsering, Sub-Judge and Secretary, DLSA Leh; Advocate Phuntsog Stobgyal, Assistant Legal Aid Defense Counsel; Advocate Tsering Laskit, Panel Lawyer; workers of the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS); DLSA staff members; and Para Legal Volunteers (PLVs), reflecting a collective commitment towards ensuring access to justice.
Addressing the gathering, Mr. Wangail Tsering highlighted the significance of the day and stressed the need to ensure equal access to justice for every citizen, particularly women and children from vulnerable backgrounds. He informed participants about various legal safeguards and elaborated on the free legal aid services provided by DLSA to eligible beneficiaries. He also briefed the audience about the Victim Compensation Scheme in cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, emphasizing financial and rehabilitative support for child victims.
Advocate Phuntsog Stobgyal underscored the importance of legal awareness in strengthening social justice and explained the procedure for availing free legal services through DLSA, encouraging timely legal intervention when required.
Advocate Tsering Laskit delivered a detailed presentation on the provisions of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act. She elaborated on the rights of aggrieved women, including protection orders, residence orders, monetary relief, custody orders, and compensation. She also explained the complaint mechanism, the role of Protection Officers, and the legal remedies available to ensure immediate and effective protection against domestic violence.
The programme concluded with an interactive session, during which participants raised queries and received clarifications from the resource persons.
