Leh — The District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Leh observed World Human Rights Day with a special outreach programme at the Old Age Home in Shey, reaffirming its commitment to inclusivity and equal access to justice. The event was held under the chairmanship of the Chairman, DLSA Leh, and attended by Advocate Nema Stanzin, Deputy Chief Legal Aid Defense Counsel, along with elderly residents, caretakers, staff members, and PLVs.
Addressing the gathering, Deputy Chief LADC Nema Stanzin highlighted the deep and essential connection between human rights and the Indian Constitution. He noted that human rights form the core of a just and equitable society, while the Constitution stands as a safeguard ensuring these rights for every individual. His address also sparked discussions on the practical relevance of human rights in today’s socio-legal environment.
The DLSA emphasised that awareness programmes at old age homes play a crucial role in educating senior citizens and their families about their legal rights, personal well-being, and access to support systems. Such initiatives typically focus on issues like hygiene, sanitation, regular health check-ups, and emotional well-being, fostering a sense of dignity and community among elderly residents.
In line with this objective, the DLSA conducted a legal awareness session on senior citizens’ rights, aimed at empowering the elderly with knowledge about the legal frameworks designed to protect and assist them.
The Authority expressed gratitude to the staff, PLVs, and all stakeholders for their participation and reiterated its ongoing commitment to protecting vulnerable groups. The programme concluded with the distribution of refreshments to all attendees as a gesture of care and solidarity.
