Leh: In a decisive move to curb the spread of misinformation and maintain public order, District Magistrate of Leh, Romil Singh Donk (IAS), has issued an order prohibiting the circulation of fake news, rumours, and unverified information on social media platforms within the jurisdiction of Leh district.
The order, issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, comes in response to reports that certain individuals and groups have been spreading misleading content through platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Telegram, potentially disturbing peace and harmony in the region.
As per the directive, no person is allowed to circulate, share, or forward any fake or unverified content. In addition, social media group administrators have been instructed to actively monitor posts and ensure immediate deletion of any rumour-mongering or misleading material. WhatsApp group admins, in particular, have been advised to activate the ‘Admin Only’ message control setting to prevent misuse.
The District Magistrate has made it clear that any violation of this order will attract strict legal action under the relevant laws. The order has been issued ex-parte in the interest of public safety and to preserve peace and tranquillity in the district.
This order shall remain in force for two months from the date of issuance (23.07.2025) or until further notice, whichever comes earlier.
