Leh, March 14: The District Institute of Education and Training Leh organised an Adolescence Education Programme at Girls Higher Secondary School Leh to raise awareness among students about the physical, emotional and psychological aspects of adolescence.
A special guest lecture was delivered by Stanzin Dolma, counsellor at the Integrated Counselling and Testing Centre (ICTC) of SNM Hospital Leh. During the session, she sensitised students about the changes experienced during adolescence and emphasised the importance of maintaining a balanced diet, regular physical activity and proper personal hygiene for overall well-being.
The counsellor also discussed common challenges faced by adolescents such as emotional stress, peer pressure and body image concerns. She encouraged students to maintain open communication with parents and teachers and warned about the harmful effects of drug addiction and substance abuse.
Another key issue highlighted during the programme was the impact of excessive screen time on the physical and mental health of young people. Students were advised to maintain a balanced daily routine by limiting screen usage, participating in outdoor activities and focusing on studies and hobbies.
The programme was attended by DIET officials Tsering Angmo, Lecturer in Sociology, and Chetna Sharma, Senior Lecturer in Zoology, who also addressed the students and emphasised the importance of adolescent education in empowering youth with life skills and responsible behaviour.
During the session, Nusrat Fatima, Vocational Trainer (Health and Wellness) at the school, delivered an informative talk on menstrual hygiene and encouraged students to adopt safe and hygienic practices while openly discussing menstrual health issues.
The programme concluded with the distribution of sanitary pads among the girl students to promote menstrual hygiene awareness.
The organisers expressed gratitude to Principal of DIET Leh Mirza Mehdi, Head of Department Tsering Yangdol, and Principal of the school Kunzang Dolma along with the staff for their support in successfully conducting the programme.
Students participated enthusiastically in the session, making the programme interactive and beneficial for young learners.
