Kargil: GDC Zanskar organized two-day long deliberation in the campus aimed to enhance the enrolment of the college on 28 and 29 April 2025.
All stakeholders, including socio-religious organizations, village committees, Lambardars, parents, teachers and college alumni from Zanskar Sub Division were invited to discuss factors leading to low enrolment of the college over the last couple of years and increase the same.
The day one saw huge participation from different socio religious organizations, villages heads, and representatives of different women societies (Ama Thsoqspa), parents and college alumni. Different aspects of the issue were discussed at length in the session.
At the onset all the invitees were welcomed with traditional khataks. The event started with welcome address by Mohd Ali Khan, Librarian followed by detailed agenda of the event by Dr Jampel Sheyan, Assistant Professor of the college through PowerPoint presentation.
The session was steered by Nasreen Fatima Assistant Professor. Prof. Mohd Ishaq, Principal GDC Zanskar presented detailed description of the college through a power point presentation covering enrolment trends, developmental works, teaching –learning facilities. He stressed upon the educational migration as a factor for low enrolment in the college.
It came into light during the daylong discussions that major factors which caused the low enrolment includes low number students in the feeding higher secondary schools in the region; low pass percentage after affiliation of government schools with CBSE, educational migration, lack of awareness among the students and parents regarding GDC Zanskar.
Suggestion were put forth from the stakeholders among which prominent were holding awareness programs among public and schools at village level, organizing career counselling, events on regular basis in schools.
The suggestions also included formation of committee among the civil society for betterment of the college and admission drive to be organized at village levels for targeting dropout candidates.
Paksang Lawang, President Zanskar Buddhist Association praised the initiative and emphasized the need of awareness at the village level, targeting parents and assured their support and dissemination of information among communities.
While appreciating the initiative, Mumtaz Ahmad, a representative of the Muslim community, acknowledged the facilities available at the college and the opportunities being provided to students that local students could not access in institutions outside the region.
On the second day of deliberation, educators, lectures, headmasters and teachers were invited and saw participation from the Education Department.
Tsewang Dorjay ZEPO Zanskar, Chewang Dorjay and Thukjey Geleck lecturer Higher Secondary School Padum, Halzang Angdus Headmaster High School Eicher, Rigzin Samphel Headmaster Karsha and teacher from other schools participated.
Dr Jamphel presented the agenda of the event. Mohd Ishaq Principal highlighted the importance of role of teachers in motivating parents and students to get enrol in the college for their higher studies. Threadbare daylong discussions were held on the topic.
Different representatives offered their suggestions for enhancing the roll in the college which included holding awareness events among parents regarding higher education, resource sharing among the college and schools.
The college management promised to implement awareness-based admission drive programs at village level in association with Education Department and various socio-religious organizations.
