Kargil: The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Kargil, in collaboration with the Union Territory Disaster Response Force (UT-DRF), conducted a comprehensive disaster preparedness and awareness camp in Sankoo on Tuesday. The initiative aimed at building public awareness and readiness in the face of natural and man-made emergencies, particularly in the remote and disaster-prone Himalayan region.
The camp was attended by Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC), Imteeaz Kacho (JKAS), Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Sankoo, Waseem Ramzan, and other senior officials, including representatives from PWD, Health Department, Education Department, and local administrative bodies. Students and faculty of the Sankoo Campus, Government Degree College Kargil, members of Basij-e-Baqiyatullah, and numerous local residents also participated actively.
A resource person from NHPC-Kargil delivered an insightful session on Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), highlighting their causes, risks, and mitigation strategies. Trainers from UT-DRF and Fire & Emergency Services emphasized the importance of scientific, first-aid-based responses during crises. They urged participants to avoid unsafe traditional methods—such as pressing the neck during choking incidents—and adopt certified, effective techniques instead.
One of the key highlights of the day was a live demonstration of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). The instructor explained how CPR can be a life-saving intervention when performed promptly during clinical emergencies. Additional demonstrations included bandaging techniques for trauma injuries, fracture immobilization using wooden splints, and innovative methods to create makeshift stretchers using everyday household items like blankets and sticks.
The hands-on training empowered participants with practical skills that can be critical in the absence of immediate medical aid, especially in isolated and high-altitude areas.
Addressing the gathering, ADC Imteeaz Kacho emphasized the importance of presence of mind during disasters, stating, “One can save others only if they remain calm and alert in a crisis.” He lauded the efforts of the organizing teams, praising the practical nature of the training and called for regular disaster preparedness camps across different parts of the district.
Concluding the event, SDM Sankoo expressed gratitude to all participating departments, volunteers, and students. He urged the administration to conduct similar programmes in Taisuru and other remote locations to broaden community preparedness across the region.
The camp ended on a positive note, with a shared commitment from officials and citizens to continue strengthening Kargil’s disaster resilience through awareness, training, and collective action.
